In the wake of Elon Musk’s purchase and rebranding of Twitter to X, it’s easy to forget that the guy used to be about more than provocative posting and condoning rampant abuse under the guise of free speech. Case in point: His founding in 2016 of Neuralink, a company that seeks to implant brain/computer interfaces in individuals with ALS, spinal cord injuries and other conditions that severely curtail their mobility. Musk himself declared the first implant a success and said (on X, naturally) that the trial participant could control a computer mouse with his thoughts. But while the organization has come under fire for ethical transgressions, including the alleged mistreatment of animal test subjects, it has succeeded in marketing itself as one of the med-tech world’s truly ambitious neurotech plays. After all, how many other clinical-stage device companies have you heard about in recent months? For better or worse, Musk knows how to wield his medical marketing megaphone.
