Walgreens Boots Alliance promotes Beth Leonard to chief corporate affairs officer

Leonard replaces Chuck Greener, who is retiring after 14 years.

Walgreens Boots Alliance has promoted Beth Leonard to SVP and chief corporate affairs officer following the retirement of Chuck Greener.

Greener served as SVP and global chief corporate affairs officer at WBA for the last 14 years. His tenure included the acquisition and integration of Boots Alliance, the absorption of more than 2,000 Rite Aid pharmacies and the company’s expansion into healthcare. Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Tim Wentworth announced Greener’s retirement in a memo to staff.

“Known as a thoughtful partner, [Greener] has guided Walgreens through crises such as H1N1, the flu and COVID-19, responding in a manner that positions Walgreens as an industry leader and a pillar of the communities in which we work,” Wentworth said in the memo, which was seen by PRWeek. “His work has elevated our voice on issues like retail crime, reimbursement rates, health equity and more.”

Greener will remain with WBA as a senior adviser and consultant through the end of 2024.

Taking over for Greener, Leonard will oversee a combined corporate affairs team comprising Walgreens’ government relations, public affairs and corporate communications functions. The team of 76 professionals will be responsible for communications with Walgreens stakeholders including employees, media, industry partners and policymakers at the local, state and federal levels, the organization said in a statement.

Reporting to Wentworth, Leonard will continue to serve on WBA’s executive committee. She has served as a strategic adviser to Wentworth since joining the company last year, according to WBA.

Leonard previously served as chief communications officer since June 2023, and was named one of PRWeek’s 2023 Health Influencer 30. WBA did not immediately respond to questions about whether Leonard will be replaced as CCO.

Prior to WBA, she served as chief corporate affairs officer for the EmblemHealth family of companies, overseeing marketing, communications, PR, government affairs and policy, community engagement, CSR and EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care.

Walgreens Boots Alliance is the holding company of retail pharmacy chains Walgreens and Duane Reade in the U.S. and Boots in the UK. WBA retail unit Walgreens named Weber Shandwick U.S. PR AOR in December.

The retail pharmacy reported $36.7 billion in revenue in its fiscal Q1, up 8.7% on a constant currency basis, as well as a net loss of $67 million, which was an improvement from a net loss of $3.7 billion in the same period of last year. Walgreens was ordered to pay a multibillion-dollar settlement in its previous fiscal Q1.
