Hi, there. This is Jack O’Brien with an mmm fast break.
I’m pleased rejoined by very special guests, Vince Wilfork, two-time Super Bowl champion with my New England, Patriots. Want to get to a couple of Patriots questions at the end, if you don’t mind. But first talk, this a little bit about food ball, you’re involvement and how it all came to be well, you know, full full is a big thing. When you deal with football, you know, food and food and sports go hand in hand and when Tom’s came in with what what they wanted to do with food ball, the fantasy football, I’m like absolutely yeah I was awful. So it’s one way to bring people together his food and sports and I supported one to 10% so I’m looking forward to see how everything unfolded right now. So far it’s amazing and it’s just to keep guys in the competitive nature. You know it’s not teams or guys and you picking this fool you picking. So it’s a good time to see how how people what people see a full and what they say is are and stuff like that. So I’m awful, I’m looking forward to it, just to see how it was all finishes up.
So I know you’ve probably answered this question multiple times today, but for those in our audience, who may be unfamiliar with the whole activation, what does it entail? I know it’s for Rounds here. Yes, it’s four rounds. So you go to www draftkings.com, slash Toms football and it’s for rounds of drafting, you know, the first round, they finish up. We finished up. Already was tailgating around and right now we in the spicy round. So, next week will be the sweet sprouts and then after that, the final round will be a New Orleans, New Orleans Cuisine ground focused around the Super Bowl. So we looking forward to it, you go on there, you draft your team and basically you draft your team, you score points by most popular vote. If you most probably what you get, you just score in the most users, you get you get to win a cash prize but it has prize so it’s pretty cool. You know, just to keep guys engaged and keep you know, Competitive Edge going and talking back and forth and stuff like that. So I’m looking forward to it. It’s been pretty cool. My wife and I we asked for going to do it today.
we have time to get to do it, but
I’m looking forward to it. Absolutely. And we’re here at this event at the backstage, Tavern, in New York, talk a little bit about what this event was like. You were kind of not Master of Ceremonies in the way, but you were kind of playing with the crowd answering questions stuff. What was that? But the whole thing it was all about, you know, just getting people. What, what’s going on with Tom’s in football, right? And just giving out information and having a little fun with it. And the same thing I just told you about how it works and how you can, you know, get get to it and download and all that stuff and just having them understand how tired Tom’s tie in to all that stuff with the football and everything. And then we had a chance to get, you know, open up questions, where, you know, people asking great questions, you know, and always pretty cool to hear from the crowd, you know. And I always start, you know, somebody doing anything I always like to do q&a’s because you know what, someone’s thinking of one and a half and now all sudden they got a chance to ask somebody. So it always end up being pretty cool. And then they didn’t film me, you know? It was a pretty cool day was pretty.
Side. In the we had fun we got a lot of information and people just laughing, you know? And that’s the thing. It’s like lightening the mood and I think we did that today. One of the questions that really stood out to me that somebody asked and you had a really insightful response to is that, you know, obviously we knew you from your playing career and now you’ve been able to Parlay this and to really being a foodie having all these marketing opportunities. Can you talk a little bit about what that means to you as an athlete to be able to say like hey I’m not just what you saw on the field, I have all these other opportunities with Brands and that’s the that’s a major thing with the least in general, you know.
A lot of people just look at this athletes and that’s all we can do. But, you know, being able being out of the game being retired and removing myself from the game itself, it allows these other companies and corporations to see me differently. What else can I bring today? Because I want you to know that I’m in the football player like you know, and I just have the luxury to have these opportunities in Toms, just probably I don’t work with
a lot of companies and I’m telling you Tom’s by far, I would be the best company I missed. I don’t deal with from, and it’s not the finest, it’s not nothing, like it’s the people. I’m a big, I’m a big believer in people. I like the feel the Vibes, the molds, like the people,
With Toms.
Is amazing in its a feeling. You get, when you’re around great people. That’s what I take from Tom, but, and they realize, you know, hey, I have something I can do something, and it’s a perfect partnership. So, I’m just glad I had the opportunity from Tom’s to Showcase. You know, who I am besides football player? Yeah, the world know me, as Vince Wilfork and all that. But now I want people to start seeing me differently, you know, some stuff, I mean, Food Network, and then, you know, Kings Road, I don’t know all these other stuff. So people starting to understand me more than the football player, which is the ultimate goal football. I was just good at that. You know what? I’m actually a better person and he is just shows when you deal with companies on high end, like toms or just goes to show you, like they value you as a person not from what you don’t but as a person. So because these companies won’t deal with you, you know? So I’m just I’m it’s a pretty busy honor to be partner with him.
In the working with them on this level. So I’m very grateful and I don’t want to understand yourself from your playing career either. I mean, I grew up watching you playing and dominating on Sundays and I want to get to that. I did want to ask you a ton specific question, which is if there’s any moment of indigestion that stands out to you. I’ve had moments of Harper, I’m like, oh my gosh, like I can’t believe this happened to me. Are there anything that stand out to you, garlic and spicy foods? Oh,
And I love me some garlic and I love my hot wings too now, so spicy foods and garlic. Oh, I have to keep a box next to me now. Oh, yeah. Oh yeah, absolutely. I actually travel with, with a box. So that’s why I said it was fitting for me, you know, because I grew up with Tums all in my house with my father, you know, for Hartman and all that. So I’ve been seeing it my whole life, you know. And that was when they were talking the original talking one. Yeah, so I grew up so it was perfect that I got a chance to work with him pretty pretty amazing. Pretty much out who. Absolutely and I wanted to ask, you just if there’s any certain advice you would pass along to other athletes, who might be, you know, I remember, we cover mostly medical marketing. I’ve seen Travis Kelce doing his stuff with Pfizer and other athletes that get approach. So, he sort of advice you would pass along to them. Like, this is what to look out for. When you’re working with the brand new talk about the people being right there, anything you’d passed along to them, I would just say have your true self be the right person because, you know, you could fake
For so long, you know, and I always said I’m gonna be true to myself. What you see is what you get? I’m not going to put on the show for nobody this person. You see right here, I wake up like this. Like I don’t, I don’t fake I am who I am, you know, and I want to be a good person, so and I think people feel that. So if anybody out there want to be you live a fake life and then gonna pull the wool over these know they see right through that, you know, so I would just say try to be the best person about to be in
Try to separate yourself just for what you know like you know tap into who you are really tap into who you are because you might have some other aspects about you that you read and you never really realize, you know, but as you plan, like start to understand who you really are, what you can do besides football and sometimes people, that’s all they have.
But sometimes people have other parts about them and whatever the other parts is start working towards now why you why? You have a chance, and you install working because one day your career going in, what are you gonna do after your career in? You know, me. So that’s why I would say, just tap into that person outside of who you are, as a football player or basketball player, whoever that means taping, who that is, who you want that person to be, you might be going back to school, it might be this, it might be that. So
find that person.
It’s very Sage advice there. I think a lot of people are audience can latch onto that. I did want to ask about your career growing up, a huge Patriots. I could point to any number of moments where you were dominant on the field, but I have to ask the Philip Rivers interception. Can you walk me through that? I remember being a busboy watching out on the TV and just being like, go go. What was what was that like from your perspective? Well, you know, I know they was a huge screen team. It’s the way it was on the field, you know, I was expected in the screen, you know. So I said to myself, I said well,
If I get us, if it’s not a run and I get a set like this from from Nic Hartmann. I said, if you set me like this I’m playing the screen and sure enough he came and he he said, he set me a little light set and I know what’s going to run.
So I’m like it’s a screen we’re coming to find out. It wasn’t a screen it was just a pass play but
I was working my way in his throwing Lane, you know, and sure enough, it’s like what’s Clockwork, it wasn’t the scream. But I was right where he wanted to get the ball to which was you know, running back out the backfield and Tiffany to myself and let’s go. That was that was in but it’s a lot went into it thinking of what I was gonna do and how I was gonna play it. If it wasn’t the screen, if you wouldn’t have never threw that way, I probably got cursed out and you talked about that early with the Belichick that you see on TV that was checking the locker room. I’m sure that that would have easily been the case talking about Patriots had coaches too. Obviously they made a change there from Jordan Mayo to Mike Rabel. You played with both of those guys curious what you make in terms of what label could bring coming back to Foxboro. After all these years was a hell of a coach. I mean, hell of a coach, hell of a person. I love, I love the pic. I love him being a head coach, and I definitely love me in the head coach there. Since they got rid of, you know, male flip side is that I think it was unfair a drawer. How they did, you know, it’s just unfair, it wasn’t right.
On that thing I think Mayo wasn’t a lose-lose situation trying to get go because he’s in he inherit that team that the best coach of head of all time Bill Belichick had for a couple years, he inherited that team so if Bill couldn’t do nothing with it. What do you think drops gonna do with it? The thing that Gerard got is, hopefully he had the franchise quarterback, he got out of the deal, you know, but far as him getting let go after the first year without an opportunity, bill
It’s bullcrap and crafts know that, you know, it’s I’m not gonna bite my time, right? That’s just what it is. That was wrong simple. And I know conversations personally that was had that he ain’t supposed to go like that. So it didn’t and there’s backstabbing it’s a lot of stuff.
You know, I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to me over recently but I’ll talk to him and just let’s see what he had because that is, that’s my brother. He’s like a brother to me, so,
I don’t like how I went down and it wasn’t fair.
Anything eating at the fair shot?
So and then now you hearing stories about this that another I’m like, come on man, you was wrong simple as that you was wrong and I’m talking about an organization. Stop trying to do all this other bullcrap. You was wrong. That was wrong. So,
Let’s see what happened. But I’m happy for, you know, I’m happy for the Patriots to be able to bring, you know, somebody like Raven to leave the team because I do think he he checked all the boxes. So I’m looking forward to see how it how it turns out. But like I said it’s a long ways though. You it’s gonna take its gonna take some reinstein. Got roster to get the most out of them, definitely, and I, it two things can be true at the same time where you talk about being wrong to Mayo, in terms of the shopping he got and all. So seeing Brave as a good pick there and you know, a lot of things, obviously, organizations gonna have to unpack on for it. Is there anything else I appreciate you? Indulging me a little patriots dog. Is there anything else as it relates to Tom’s or this partnership that you want those in our audience stuff, understanding takeaway here? I just say, boy, I’m military
Oh, that’s huge. That’s one of the main things. And one of the things that’s near did in my heart, we do a lot with the military and
I don’t want people to just think of military money, you know, and to think about our military because every night we go to sleep,
They take care of us.
Then War zones 24/7. So they deserve more than just a freaking month or a couple weeks they deserve daily up their support. So that’s what I was saying and I want we want to rain more attention to supporting our military notes because they do, they do a lot for us and they do stuff that you get. We don’t even know, they do, you know. But the thing is I’ve seen you first hand being over to these places, what they do for us I’ve been on carriers, I’ve been doing the landing strip I’ve been doing and Sicily, I’ve been in Naples, I’ve been in Romania, I’ve been all these but I mean it’s Spain. I’ve been in Europe. I mean, all of these places, you know, remote locations, where is just so I know what it would mean to them to have more support.
In just a month or week out of a year. So that’s what I want to get out to everybody out there. Awesome. Well again, appreciate you making the time. Appreciate your work. On this partnership, too.
